I am knitting!

Not right now, obviously, as I haven't perfected typing and knitting at the same time. As soon as I grow the extra arms I want though, that'll be one of the first things I do.

I grew up doing the odd bit of knitting here and there. I remember making a scarf for a toy I had, and that was in the first house I remember, so before the age of 4. I then did many squares for various quilts my Brownie pack made for local old people*. I never learned to cast on or cast off, relying on my mum or grandparents to do that for me. I also never learned to purl - they tried to teach me a few times, but it was as much a mystery as why all my pet slugs in jars died when I gave them crisps to eat.

Now that I'm all grown up (although not a Grown-Up, in so many ways), I've returned to knitting, and I'm progressing in leaps and bounds (bet you never realised it was such an active pastime!). I've learned to cast on, change balls (aaaaaah, how the shout of "new balls" brings back memories of parrafin, beaches, and "fwoomph" noises!) *and* purl. Go me!

I have loads more to learn, but I'm devouring instructional videos, and looking forward to having a project that calls for k1f&b, 'cause I totally understood the video. It's not so necessary in a scarf, though, so that stitch is on the back-burner.

I am totally prepared for my role, sitting at the feet of Mlle. Guillotine when the revolution comes.

* Please note - when I am an old person, please do not knit me a quilt. it will make me come up in itchy hives**. A mink throw+ should suffice.

I know, a wool-allergist knitting. It's not big nor clever. The stuff I have at the mment is all man-made, and I've yet to venture into sheep-jacket. I'm hoping it'll be ok. It might not be. if it's not, there's plenty non-sheep stuff to try. Alpaca... mmm... elvisllamas...

+ But not a real mink throw, that's cruel.

comments

I'm not sure quite how I've managed this, but I have at least 4 lots of photos that I have to get out on tight deadlines, and at least another 4 that I should have got out ages ago. I'm allowing myself a bank holiday (plan is to cycle up into town for a picnic), then I'm going to be getting up early and doing actual work, like a normal working person.

It's hit me unexpectedly, but as it's what I want to be happening I'm not complaining at all. Just a little awed that it's actually happening.

I'm quite glad I've spent the past few months refining my workflow in dribs and drabs, even if I haven't been getting as much of the bulky-work done that I really should have - at least I can hit the ground running - and as we all know, if you run fast enough and focus hard enough, eventually you fly.

comments

This is just a wee heads-up that I don't know how I'll be using this journal yet - I have thoughts, but I'm going to wait and see - as we all know, the proof is in the pudding (and I do like pudding...)

Because of this, I don't know who I'm going to grant access to yet - I may possibly want to keep it quite close-in, which will mean excluding people I call "friends". I may not - I don't know yet. So, if you've added me and I haven't added you back yet, it's because of this. Not because I don't like you or consider you a friend.

As for subscribing to other people, I'm definitely going to be trying to keep numbers down on that - work is starting to make me very busy, and I have the heart and stomach of a <strike>concrete elephant</strike>procrastinator, so the more I have to read in easy access, the more I will read before knuckling down and doing any work. It doesn't mean I won't be reading you at all, just that I won't have you the handy one-click-away place that's oh-so-tempting when I have a backlog the size of the Sahara to get cracking on with.

All that said... it's a good week to start a llama-farm, don't you think? ;)

comments
